were shot at 36th street and west street. ktvu channel 2 reporter jade hernandez joins us now from oakland with more on all this violence, jade. >> reporter: good morning. investigations are not unusual in oakland but last night the calls began rolling in. three shootings all within an hour as you minced. the first happened at foothill boulevard and 62nd avenue where a man was shot. someone shot the man in the back. let's take a look at that video right there. while officers were helping that victim someone drove up to them and reported another shooting on 79th avenue and holly streets. officers found a woman there. her finger had been shot off. paramedics rushed her to highland hospital. then decision patchers sent officers on their third shooting of the night. two victims were found in that shooting, a man and woman. their injuries were more severe, it appears they were sitting in their car when they were shot. both were rushed to highland hospital and surgery once they arrived. they are in critical condition. at this point these shootings don't seem to be connected but no inform

the right and they are looking at it looks like a pile of metal over there. it is hard for us to see from where we are right now but they are standing over it and have a flashlight on it. police say there were two kids and two adults and the driver survived but the passenger did not according to the story we are hearing from the wires the passenger was unable to get out of the car and the car burned essentially so the person was inside the car, pronounced dead at the scene. the identities of the people have not been released -- [ inaudible ] >> reporter: -- police are telling us the car spun out of control, hit a light pole and possibly a tree before crashing and then starting on fire. not been determined if alcohol is a factor in this crash just yet. can't -- it is really dark out here but you are getting a look at that pile of metal right now. we are going to try to investigate what that is. i will be working on getting a lieutenant after here to talk to me. >> two attacks, two robberies al on one night. oakland police say distractions could lead to more incidents like these. jade

morning about what happened last night. family members tell us that 57- year-old dennis wayne dixon was shot in the doorway of his apartment, that is the apartment with the light on the porch and his stepson was tied up and beaten. take a look at this. paramedics rushed him to the hospital. we are told the stepson lived here with him and may soon be released from the hospital later this morning. the details which led up to the shooting are not complete yet. initially police confirmed this was a home invasion but the victims and suspects may have known each other. his mother was told her son pulled up to the apartment and exchanged words with the suspects which is when they tried to force themselves into the apartment. that is when dennis dixon was shot in the doorway. we are even hearing the stepson wasn't the only one in the apartment at the time of the shooting. her mother told us her son was a vendor of sorts and had a booth where he sold clothes and dvds out of. she said she could barely understand the bad news. >> she was crying on the phone but i could not understand nothing b

pg&e tell us they decided to delay repairs on a section of pipeline. >> reporter: the short answer you'll hear from pg&e president in just a second. the short answer is it was a matter of priorities. a lot of questions about that pipe that failed in san bruno. this time the questions being asked. we know there's a section of pipe located in san francisco. according to documents made available to the media by utility watchdog turn pg&e applied for and was given permission to raise our rates to pay to replace a section of pipe in south san francisco. that was back in 2007. pg&e told regulators at the time that the risk of failure of that pipe was unacceptably high. the utility collected nearly $5 million and supposed to replace the section last year but did not. >> some things happen when we're going down and a year later maybe some other item becomes more emergents that we need to fix. that's why we will redirect funds to take care of the things that are urgent today and then go back and look and say what are the things that are urgent tomorrow. >> re: it's not clear right now pledg

. >>> we have been talking to people out here and they told us certainly the question of could this happen again weighs on their minds. pg&e is expected to release a list into areas of concern. and certainly people want to see that less. the question is, what are they going to do about that list? and that is still unclear this morning. now, san jose's mayor, chuck reed, said that the intersection of taz min and first is on the list. that's what he's been told by pg&e. and they are on this apparent list that could be released as early as today. but other than that, it doesn't appear the city has gotten much more. the city wants to make this list public. they have already made public areas of fremont, south san francisco, and livermore, that have been deemed high risk. but what this means in terms of an action plan, still not clear. and people we talked to this morning say they are worried. >> i would probably try to avoid those areas that are high risk. because obviously something bad happened once. and it is possible that it could happen in san jose. >> reporter: how much this list will ac

out there on the scene. jade, what can you tell us? >> reporter: well, pam, i can tell you right now we have some good news. we've heard about 20 minutes ago they were able to cap this line. there was some difficulty though overnight. this happened around 11:20 last nighttime. here's the reason for the difficulty. crews were digging at three different spots. in those three different spots they had to be capped before the crews could stop the leak. at first pg&e thought this was a six inch break around 11:30 last night. so the fire department evacuated about 14 homes. then as knowledge spread that the line was only two inches, those families were allowed back inside. the fire department said there was no reason to be concerned about this gas leak. the chief told us that the gas was dissipating into the atmosphere. >> i just think that there's this heightened awareness of the potential of natural gas leaks and what could occur. yeah. we responded just like we would have responded any way. i think that the public's going to be more concerned. >> reporter: the city manager was out here e

homes. the city manager has been updating us for hours now. >> right now we're all on standby. we have had about nine units from the sheriff's department that responded. we had three engines from the fire district that responded along with fire chief and battalion chief. >> reporter: the fire department, pg&e crews are out here. we actually can't smell any of the odor that has been placed with the natural gas because the wind is kind of pushing that all away from where we are located. but we can hear this two inch line still spewing that natural gas into the atmosphere this morning. we can tell you anyone trying to access eastbound highway 24 may have trouble at this hour. the city manager has already made contingency plans for drivers commuting this morning since repairs aren't expected to be done soon. we've been told it is shut down through downtown. but brookwood has been opened. so drivers can drive past the theater and on to the freeway. we'll have more on this coming up in just a little bit. live from oridan, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> two other incidents of n

issued an important warning to people living around lake merritt. jade hernandez joins us now from our newsroom with more. >> reporter: good morning. two actual assaults and two robberies took place on the same day -- [ inaudible ] >> reporter: oak land police want anyone in and and the lake merritt area to be careful and aware 0 of their surroundings, police say he man responsible m attacked the two women sunday in relatively secluded areas but the department is not saying when or where the attacks took place. both were on their way home. police plan to release a skep of the attacker later today but for now they want anyone in the area to be more alert and report anything suspicious to police. >> from what we have been seeing recently with these robberies is people distracted by their cell phone and other electronic devices so especially be diligent entering and exiing cars and coming and going to and from home. >> reporter: the attacker is african american, in his 20s, 510 to 6'0" with a medium build wearing dark clothes. police say he is armed and dangerous. live more on this. l

begin our team coverage this morning with claudine wong. where are you and what can you tell us this morning? >> reporter: pam, we are as close to the fire line as they will allow us here on skyview. this is the command post, the staging area. there are two lines of police tape leading to that area. they don't want anyone getting closer. they are declaring this a crime scene and pushing everyone back. this has been an unbelievable scene for hours. it rocked this scene and created an inferno that destroyed dozens of homes in its wake. the priority is to get the fire out, which at last estimate was only 50% contained. -- [ inaudible ] >> reporter: -- lieutenant- governor abel maldonado, the acting governor was on the scene from 1:30 to 4:00. he has declared a state of emergency and pland a briefing hours from now. and, of course you have everyone asking how this happened. everything points to this being a natural gas explosion. a full investigation was underway but aman said they were warn in signs. >> every day i could smell that smell from the gutter and sewer. a week and a half

tells us dennis dixon was shot in the doorway. his 22-year-old stepson was assaulted and taken to the hospital. you can see paramedics taking the stepson away earlier last night. we are told he lived here with his stepfather and may be released earlier. now you are looking at that video of the. the dills which led up to the shooting are not complete. initially police confirmed this was a home invasion but they may have known each oamplet din miss dixon's mother told us she was told her son pulled up to the apartment before 11:00 last night and exchanged words with one of the suspects which is when the suspects forced themselfs into the apartment and then the shooting happened. dennis dixon's brother told us his daughter woke him up in a panic. >> she just banged on the door and said dad, wake up your brother was murdered. and i ran with my boxers on and i just ran to the door and said 0 lord, no, please don't tell me that. and she said, yes. >> reporter: we nt that police arrived quickly to the scene and arrested two men they believed were involved in the shooting at 1:00 a.m. at
